ROADS OF SERBIA: THEFT OF TRAFFIC SIGNAGE AND EQUIPMENT ENDANGERS THE SAFETY OF ROAD USERS

PE “Roads of Serbia” informs the public that, due to increasingly frequent theft of traffic signage and road equipment, the safety of road users is seriously endangered.

The most thefts happen in the loop zones and near the bridges, especially the ones that connect country and local roads across highways and expressways, in places where there is easy access to the wired fence trough country roads.

PE “Roads of Serbia” especially calls attention to the theft of traffic signage and road equipment as socially irresponsible and punishable under the Road Traffic Safety Act, which provides for fines, imprisonment or both measures for endangering traffic safety.

In the past period, there have been frequent thefts of gates and wire fences on newly built sections, the Ruma-Šabac highway and the Šabac-Loznica expressway, which represents a serious security problem and makes regular maintenance and protection of the state road difficult.

On the section from Šabac to Prnjavor, out of a total of 60 installed gates, 14 were stolen, while on the Ruma-Šabac section, out of 34 installed gates, 7 were stolen.

Also, on the same section, about 2 kilometers of sheet metal, which was placed on a wire fence to protect amphibians, was stolen.

This type of vandalism and theft represents not only material damage, but also a potential safety risk, because by removing the protective fence there is a possibility of animals entering the road, which directly threatens the safety of all road users.

PE "Roads of Serbia" appeals to citizens not to participate in such illegal actions, but to report to the competent authorities any observed form of theft or destruction of public property, so that together we can contribute to a safer and more responsible environment for all road users.
