In the Palace of Serbia on July 16, 2026, organized by the Ministry of Interior, the Traffic Police Administration, the Agency for Traffic Safety, Roads of Serbia and the Automobile Association of Serbia, a media conference was held where the state of traffic safety in the first half of 2026 was presented, as well as the most important activities and plans for the next quarter.
The head of the traffic police administration, Slaviša Lakićević said that in the first six months of 2026, we had 188 fatalities on Serbian roads, which is 39 less than last year, while 8,300 persons were injured in traffic accidents, which is about 500 less. He emphasized that the trend of decreasing fatalities continued and that 73 days were recorded without victims in traffic accidents.
Lakićević stated that six people died in one day, March 8, and that five deaths were recorded in two days.
When it comes to the categories of road users where deaths were recorded, as Lakićević said, there was a decrease compared to last year in almost all categories, and the largest decrease was in the category of passenger vehicles - 33 percent, while in the category of pedestrians there was a decrease of 10 percent.
"The number of children killed is worrying, this year we have four children, two from the category of pedestrians, two from the category of passengers. That is three less than last year, but we want zero children killed on the roads," said Lakićević.
He emphasized that the main cause of death on the roads in Serbia is speed, followed by 18 percent of driver errors, alcohol, loss of control of the vehicle, and inexperience.
Stating that side effects of traffic accidents are the leading cause of death in the world, as well as of young people and children, Lakićević emphasized that traffic safety is the responsibility of every road user.
Milan Ilić, the Advisor to the Director of the Agency for Traffic Safety, said that the activities they carry out throughout Serbia are aimed at supporting increased security and that, in addition to key messages and conversations, certain practical trainings are also conducted.
According to him, in the first six months, 45 young people aged between 15 and 30 died, although the Agency carried out numerous activities. This year, about 7,000 high school graduates in 69 local governments were included in the "Car-Free Graduation" campaign.
In order to point out the problem of speed, as stated by Milić, they use rollover and head-on collision simulators, and about 30,000 simulations are carried out annually.
He stated that activity with motorcyclists is also very important. Stating that 32 drivers and passengers on motorcycles were killed in the first six months, which is seven more than last year, Milić said that this is why practical trainings that develop skills and safe training have been intensified.
The head of the Department for Public Relations of Roads of Serbia Ljerka Ibrović stated that in year 2025, 92 potential dangerous places or black spots on state roads in Serbia were identified, which is a decrease of 37 percent compared to the last 10 years.
"The most important planned activities for the next quarter are, among others, the revision of traffic safety in the phase of conceptual projects for the reconstruction and construction of the Maradik interchange, the construction of the bridge over the Danube River near Bačka Palanka, the reconstruction and construction of bypasses around Bački Jarkak and Temerin, as well as the construction of the Svilajnac bypass," said Ibrović.
Also, Ibrović added that a traffic safety audit will be carried out in the project phase for a construction permit for the construction of the sections Bubanj Potok - Boleč and Starčevo-Pančevo on the route of sector C of the Bypass around Belgrade.
"Roads of Serbia continue with the regular implementation of the traffic safety audit procedure in the mentioned phases of the projects with the primary goal of improving the safety of the road infrastructure of new road routes, before the actual construction or reconstruction," emphasized Ibrović.
General Secretary of AMAS Milan Nikolić said that they are not satisfied with the data, even though they are better compared to the previous quarter.
"We are definitely moving towards better results, we are moving towards our vision of zero victims", said Nikolić and added that today's conference shows that progress has been achieved, but that on the other hand, we must work harder and more diligently, because in one day those same results can be disrupted and spoiled.
He appealed to everyone to drive fresh, not to consume alcohol, respect traffic regulations and thus protect their lives and the lives of other road users.
