In the presence of the President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Siniša Mali, Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Aleksandra Sofronijević, Director of Corridors of Serbia Aleksandar Antić, Acting Director of Roads of Serbia Zoran Drobnjak, as well as representatives of the contractors and local governments, a new 28-kilometer section of the Danube Corridor was officially opened to traffic on August 30, 2026.
The Danube Corridor begins at the Požarevac junction on the Belgrade–Niš highway and runs via the Požarevac bypass and Veliko Gradište to Golubac. The total length of the corridor is 68 kilometers.
Addressing the audience, President Vučić pointed out that the Danube Corridor is a project of key importance and the realization of a dream for eastern Serbia.
"This project is of crucial importance for the realization of our national interests, providing a strong boost to domestic tourism, and raising the economic standard of the entirety of eastern Serbia," President Vučić said.
President Vučić emphasized that Serbia currently ranks first in Europe in highway network growth per capita, noting that he is proud of Serbia and everything accomplished in recent years. He added that preparations are immediately underway to continue construction on the Golubac–Donji Milanovac–Brza Palanka expressway.
Following the opening of this new 28-kilometer section, a total of 62 kilometers of the Danube Corridor will be open to traffic, leaving just 6 kilometers under construction.
A total of 62 structures (55 completed), 6 interchanges (5 completed, 1 existing interchange undergoing reconstruction), and 16 roundabouts (14 completed) are being built along the expressway. The expressway is designed for a travel speed of 100 km/h.
Across all sections open to traffic, a total of 4,970,000 m³ of material, 430,000 tons of asphalt, 2,170,000 m³ of stone, 9,680 tons of steel, 62,200 m³ of concrete, 209 km of guardrails, and 124 km of wire fencing have been installed.
The construction of the Danube Corridor will connect Požarevac, Veliko Gradište, and Golubac with Belgrade, shortening the travel time from Belgrade to Golubac to just 1 hour and 20 minutes. This project holds immense significance for national transportation infrastructure interests, significantly impacting the growth and improvement of the commercial and business sectors across the Republic of Serbia, while boosting local development and the economic potential of eastern Serbia.
