TRAFFIC SAFETY IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2026

Organized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Traffic Police Administration, Traffic Safety Agency, Putevi Srbije and the Automobile Association of Serbia in the Palace of Serbia on April 8, 2026 “Presentation of the state of traffic safety in the first quarter of 2026 was held”.

The Head of the traffic police administration, Slaviša Lakićević said that in the first three months of year 2026, we had 81 fatalities, which is 21 less than in the same period of the previous year.

During the presentation Lakićević said that the number of injured traffic participants is by more than 650 less than the previous year, but that there is no reason to be satisfied as long as there are those who died in traffic.

"It is important to point out that significant progress has been achieved and the trend of reducing casualties on our roads from the previous year has continued. One of the particularly important indicators in the first quarter is that in the first 90 days there were even 47 days without fatalities in traffic accidents, which is significant progress and continues the trend of reduction, and gives us the direction to achieve the ambitious goals of the traffic safety strategy and to have no children killed by 2030," said the head of the Traffic Police Administration.

He added that in the first quarter, 29 drivers of passenger vehicles were killed, which is 11 less than the previous year, but that, despite the progress, there are still problems related to the deaths of pedestrians and motorcyclists.

Branko Stamatović, Acting Director, pointed out that the Traffic Safety Agency conducts numerous activities and campaigns aimed at all categories of traffic participants in order to improve traffic safety. "The data show significant progress, especially when it comes to the use of safety systems - as many as 83.9% of drivers and passengers use seat belts on the front seat, while child seats are used in 69.9% of cases. However, there is still room for improvement, especially when it comes to the use of seat belts on the back seat, which is 32.5%," Stamatović emphasized. The agency put special emphasis on the education of children and young people through programs such as "Pažljivko", during which 70 performances were held for around 15,000 children. About 60,000 children in 69 local self-governments were covered through the "Pažljvko review", which systematically builds awareness of safe behavior from an early age.

Ljerka Ibrović, Head of the Department for Public Relations of Putevi Srbije pointed out that traffic safety is a basic imperative for Putevi Srbije.

The construction of new road routes in previous years has achieved significant effects in terms of improving the state of traffic safety compared to old road routes.

"The analysis showed that from year 2016 to 2025, when the first section of the Miloš Veliki motorway, from Ljig to Preljina, was opened, the number of fatalities in traffic accidents on the Ibar motorway decreased by more than 50% on an annual basis, i.e. we saved at least 50 human lives," said Ibrović, adding that on the same road route, the number of identified dangerous places or black spots decreased by as much as 60%, pointing out that from 10 dangerous places in 2016 and 2017, we reduced them to 3 to 4 dangerous places existing now.

Similar results were recorded with the construction of the Šabac - Loznica express road, the first section of the Moravian Corridor, the section of the “Miloš Veliki” motorway from Preljina to Pakovraće and the Bypass around Belgrade to Bubanj Potok. On the example of all five built new infrastructure projects, the presented analysis showed that the construction of new highways and expressways significantly reduced the number of people injured in traffic accidents.

AMAS General Secretary Milan Nikolić emphasized the association's long tradition and high level in providing services and technical support to users, as well as good cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, the Agency for Traffic Safety and Putevi Srbije. “One of our most important areas of activity is certainly prevention and work with children on education in the field of traffic safety, such as the competition for children “What do you know about traffic”, which will be held for the 57th time this year and through which more than 300,000 elementary school students pass annually, who are educated through play and fun”, said Nikolić.
