UNITED AND SAFE ON THE WAY TO 0

The Ministry of Internal Affairs - Traffic Police Administration, Traffic Safety Agency and Roads of Serbia, at the 57th International Automobile Fair in Belgrade, as part of a joint performance, on March 20, 2026, held the promotion of all activities and campaigns undertaken to raise awareness of the importance of responsible and safe behavior in traffic, in order to achieve the goals of the "On the Road to Zero" campaign and the goals of the Traffic Safety Strategy of the Republic of Serbia until 2030.

It was pointed out that the main goal of the joint action of institutions, through prevention, campaigns and education, is to reduce the number of dead and seriously injured persons by 50% compared to 2019 and reaching a zero rate of child injuries in traffic, in accordance with the outlined goals of the Strategy.

Those present were addressed by Branko Stamatović, Acting Director of the Agency for Traffic Safety, Slaviša Lakićević, Head of the Traffic Police Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Darko Savić, Director of the Sector for Toll Collection Department and Ljerka Ibrović, Head of the Department of Public Relations Department “Roads of Serbia”.

The joint performance of representatives of all institutions and the information presented to the public once again confirmed the importance of all activities aimed at raising awareness of the importance of responsible behavior on the roads, because education, compliance with regulations and prevention are key factors for reducing the number of traffic accidents and increasing the safety of all road users.

Through campaigns and educational activities, in cooperation with the Agency for Traffic Safety, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Serbia and other partners, efforts are being made to strengthen awareness of the importance of complying with traffic regulations, the use of seat belts and child seats, reducing risky behaviors such as speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol-psychoactive substances, keeping the proper distance, proper use of the stop lane, highlighting the importance of traffic signals, using winter equipment...

Branko Stamatović, acting Director of the Agency for Traffic Safety said that the Agency's idea is that through the vehicle rollover simulator, visitors will have the opportunity to get to know how the seat belt protects both passengers and drivers in the event of a traffic accident, and reminded that the use of the seat belt is mandatory. "For twenty seconds of rolling over in the simulator, everyone can see how important a seat belt is in the event of a traffic accident," Stamatović pointed out.

The head of the traffic police, Slaviša Lakićević, stated that the security situation in 2026 has improved compared to the previous year because 18 people died in traffic less than in the same period of the previous year. He emphasized the importance of wearing a seat belt as one of the important safety factors in the event of a traffic accident. He also appealed to the media to help highlight the danger posed by looking at a mobile phone while driving and stated that just one second of looking at the phone practically means that the driver squinted and steered the vehicle for 30 meters.

Ljerka Ibrović, head of the Department for Public Relations of “Roads of Serbia”, noted that all the actors of the promotion are on the same common task: “Together and safely on the way to zero!" and that the three main institutions that work to increase traffic safety in the Republic of Serbia have the same goal - to reduce road deaths in Serbia, first of all, to eliminate the injuries of children on the roads, which can only be achieved through good synergy, joint work, campaigns and activities with which we want to educate, as she emphasized, road users, i.e. drivers, so that they understand what is desirable and correct behavior in traffic, and what is undesirable, with a message for all of us: “Be responsible to yourself and to others”.

The goal of all activities is to approach the vision of a system in which traffic accidents no longer lead to the loss of human lives, in accordance with the principles of traffic safety and vision 0, Ibrović pointed out.

In addition to the key activities to raise the level of traffic safety, the public was also presented with novelties in the operation of the toll collection system, as part of the modernization of the road network in Serbia, which also significantly contributes to increasing the safe flow of traffic.

Darko Savić, director of the Toll Collection Sector “Roads of Serbia” pointed out that the goal of the Roads of Serbia is to use additional income to determine additional funds for increasing the safety of all road users, because the projects and systems that have been designed and arranged so far, jointly worked with the Agency for Traffic Safety and the Traffic Police Administration, have shown that the number of fatalities and the number of traffic accidents has decreased by 35 percent in the past few years.

“We are still ten days away from the start of toll collection for heavy goods vehicles on the Bypass, that is, on the part of the Bypass around Belgrade in a length of about 39 km.

I can proudly say that the equipment has been installed, that the system has been tested, and currently people in Putevi Srbije are working on training, validation, or validation of simulated data and the toll collection system so that the collection system can be successfully implemented from April 1,” added Savić.
